For my money, the stretch of Vermont Avenue that runs through Los Feliz between Hollywood and Griffith Park is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in L.A. Not only is there the famed restaurant House of Pies, Skylight Books and Churro Borough but you also get Fred 62 and The Dresden. 

And, really what would Los Feliz be without The Dresden and resident musicians Marty and Elayne?

The gentrification debate that’s shaking up the historic core of DTLA has some precedent in San Jose. On a much smaller scale, the rundown heart of Silicon Valley saw a massive revitalization in the late 1980s and early 1990s and has dealt with many of the problems LA now faces. Displaced homeless, destruction of historic buildings and parking and traffic problems that don’t solve themselves… 

What will Mayor Eric Garcetti’s legacy be? The new skyline? The Olympics? Does anyone think it’s odd that he’s not a larger presence on our political stage in spite of these accomplishments? For my money, it seems that Garcetti only attends highly scripted events and avoids reporters the way President Donald Trump avoids an open bag of Lay’s potato chips… 

Is it me or does the weather we’ve had this month make it seem like anything but Christmastime? Can’t it get cooler? Start raining? I’d like to know if the drought has returned. That would be terrible news … 

Do businesses still give out calendars at this time of year? Ever wonder if the calendar business is going the way of the newspaper business? … Speaking of that, if will be interesting to see what happens to the L.A. Weekly now that it’s been bought by a group out of Orange County that has trouble with the spelling of Angeleno…
