Arcadia man could get life in prison for attacking girlfriend

ALHAMBRA (CNS) – An Arcadia man was sentenced today to a potential life prison term for stabbing his then-18-year-old girlfriend in front of her Temple City home and threatening her if she cooperated with police.

Superior Court Judge Michael Villalobos ordered Matthew Fay Echauri, 25, to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole plus 10 years in connection with the March 2, 2017, attack.

Echauri was convicted Feb. 6 of one felony count each of attempted murder and mayhem, along with two counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime with force and violence.

Jurors also found true allegations that the defendant personally used a knife during the commission of the crime and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim under circumstances involving domestic violence.

Echauri stabbed the young woman multiple times while on a neighbor’s lawn as she began walking away from him during an argument. Echauri called the victim from jail two days later and threatened her if she cooperated with law enforcement, according to witness testimony.
