SANTA MONICA (CNS) – An armed burglary suspect was hospitalized this morning in stable condition with a gunshot wounded he suffered in an officer-involved shooting in Santa Monica.
The shooting occurred after police responded about 6:20 p.m. Thursday to a residential burglary in progress call in the 1100 block of Pine Street, according Santa Monica Police Department Lt. Candice Cobarrubias.
“The suspect had a handgun and pointed it at the resident,” Cobarrubias said. “The resident fled the home and called the police.”
The suspect then remained inside and began taking things from the house, the lieutenant said.
“The Santa Monica Police Department arrived on scene and found the suspect in the driveway of the residence, holding the firearm in his hand,” Cobarrubias said. “The suspect ran and barricaded himself in a rear yard in the 1100 block of Cedar Street. With the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department air unit we were able to maintain visual contact of the suspect. As we made contact with the suspect, an officer involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was struck by gunfire and sustained a wound to his abdomen, Cobarrubias said.
“The suspect remained non-compliant and the K9 was deployed,” the lieutenant said. “The suspect was taken into custody. One of our officers is an EMT and provided first aid on the suspect until he was transported to a local hospital.”
The name of the suspect was not released.
