DOWNEY (CNS) – Jaywalking pedestrians or bicyclists not following traffic laws could be ticketed today in Downey where police are conducting a special enforcement operation aimed at preventing crashes that lead to injuries and deaths, authorities said.
Extra officers will be posted in locations where pedestrian and bike crashes have occurred, Downey police Sgt. Jaime Pelayo said.
Officers will watch for pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right away, Pelayo said. Pedestrians should cross only in marked crosswalks or at corners, he said.
Officers will watch for bike riders who fail to follow the same traffic laws that apply to motorists and riders under age 18 without required helmets, Pelayo said.
Drivers who speed, make illegal turns, fail to stop for signs and signals or fail to yield to pedestrians could also be cited, he said.
The special enforcement will continue next Friday and Saturday, Pelayo said.
