LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A former basketball coach at Cedarlane Academy in Hacienda Heights admitted to having a sexual relationship with a female teenage student and was sued today along with the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District and other parties.
Terrence Lee, 30, of La Habra, pleaded no contest on May 18, to one felony count of oral copulation of a person under 16, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He was ordered by a Pomona Superior Court judge to undergo a 90-day mental exam prior to his Aug. 17 sentencing to help the judge determine whether Lee is suitable for probation or should be sent to prison.
The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit was filed on behalf of the plaintiff, who is identified only as Jane CF Doe. Named as defendants are: HLPUSD, Lee, and the Prime Time Basketball Association Inc.
Lee worked as an employee for both the district and for Prime Time, the suit states, although the HLPUSD previously said he was a “walk-on” coach.
The suit alleges sexual battery, gender violence, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The complaint seeks unspecified damages.
HLPUSD Superintendent Cynthia Parulan-Colfer did not immediately reply to an email sent for comment.
The plaintiff was a participant in Prime Time’s basketball program from early 2015 until June 2017, the suit states. Lee sexually abused the girl during that time at various locations, including at the Cedarlane school grounds and other locations overseen by Prime Time, the suit states.
The girl continues to suffer severe emotional distress from the abuses and her academic development has suffered, the suit states.
The district and Prime Time had an obligation to protect the girl and to properly supervise Lee, but failed both tasks, the suit states.
