Officers serving warrants in Azusa engage in non-injury shootout with suspect

Some Azusa residents woke up to gunshots Thursday morning, as officers serving warrants in a gang investigation there traded gunfire with a suspect and arrested him.

A Pomona police SWAT team was also involved in the gunfight, according to the Azusa Police Department. The operation took place at 5540 Lark Ellen Ave., where at 4:03 a.m., Pomona officers came under fire.

According to the preliminary investigation, one or more Pomona officers returned fire, and the alleged gunman was taken into custody, said sheriff’s Capt. John Roberts. No one was injured, according to the Azusa Police Department, and the man’s name was not immediately released.

The shooting took place just a block away from Valleydale Elementary School. However, officials said that school operations were not disrupted as a result of the shooting.

Warrants were served at a number of locations in the Azusa area, as part of a gang-related investigation. It was not immediately disclosed if any other suspects were arrested.

According to Azusa officials, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will be handling the shooting investigation.
