POMONA (CNS) – A West Covina man is scheduled to be sentenced May 14 for the ax murder of a professional dancer whose body was found in a remote area of Azusa Canyon in September 2016.
Phillip Von Wade, 22, is facing 26 years to life in state prison for his no contest plea this week to first-degree murder in the Sept. 5, 2016, killing of Rahkeem “Rocky” Reyes, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Wade also admitted personally using an ax during the commission of the crime.
The victim — an acquaintance of Wade’s — had commissioned him to create a Batman costume for Comic-Con, and Wade had missed the deadline and a second deadline was approaching without the costume being completed, according to Eakins.
Wade lured Reyes to his home, where he killed him with an ax, according to Eakins. Reyes’ body was discovered 2 1/2 miles up Azusa Canyon five days later.
Reyes was a professional dancer who had appeared in several dance videos, movies and commercials, in addition to live stage performances, according to a family friend.
