Active Nation Day empowers women through fitness

Adults in the U.S. are falling short on physical activity, studies say. Nearly 80 percent of adults don’t meet the CDC’s physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2008.

Activewear company, Lorna Jane has offered fitness classes, healthy eating tips and motivation on the last Sunday of September since 2012, which is known as Active Nation Day. In-store events will take place at Lorna Jane locations across the world. Westfield Santa Anita customers will receive 30 percent off on Sept. 30.

“What better way to work out than with a group of inspiring women,” said Joecelyn Mendez, shop manager at Lorna Jane, Westfield Santa Anita.

Staying active includes a mix of aerobic exercises, such as running and spinning, plus strength and resistance training.

Sample classes, such as yoga and zumba, at the Lorna Jane Westfield Santa Anita location. Zumba, a dance workout fueled by Latin music, is a popular choice among women and yoga provides a focused, low-impact workout. Mendez described Pound Fit as a high-intensity workout which incorporates drumsticks.

“We embody our philosophy of move, nourish, believe,” Mendez said. “When you look good and feel good and workout with your friends, you’re going to continue to do it.”

3 – 4 p.m. Groove with Susan Lai

4 – 5 p.m. Bhakti Vinyasa Yoga with Gladys Bartolo

5 – 7 p.m. Zumba with Chakira Bonilla, Yessica Diaz and Angie Lopez

Active Nation Day will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at  Westfield Santa Anita – Lorna Jane, 400 S. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia.
