Self Help Graphics, a community-based art gallery and production space which focuses on Chicano and Latinx art, will host its 45th annual free Dia de los muertos celebration on Nov. 2.
Dia de Los Muertos takes place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2., when deceased friends and family members are thought to return to Earth. Altars celebrating the lives of the decreased, pan de muerto, a special confection; and calacas; skeletons, are iconic parts of the holiday tradition.
Self Help Graphics has partnered with Mendez High School in Boyle Heights for this year’s procession and traditional danza blessing. The traditional procession will begin at Mariachi Plaza and end at Self Help Graphics where a Dia de los Muertos-themed art exhibit is currently on view. Expect community altars, papier-mâché sculptures, live music and kid-friendly activities. Enjoy street food vendors and shop for handmade crafts from local artists.
45th Anniversary Dia de los Muertos Celebration will take place on Friday, Nov. 2 beginning with a procession at 4:30 p.m. at Mariachi Plaza. Festivities will continue at Self Help Graphics and Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School, 1200 Plaza Del Sol, Boyle Heights, until 10 p.m.
