Essential Events: Indoor events to ride out cool weather this week

If you’ve been waiting for summer fun all winter, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer. Despite an initial forecast of sunny skies this week, updated predictions suggest more overcast days and even a few rainy nights ahead. Luckily, we’ve got you covered with plenty of indoor events to keep your squad entertained anyway.

 

Monday – Magic and Beer

Magic and beer? It may seem like too good to believe, but Angel City sure isn’t pulling any tricks with its Monday night event, featuring illusionists Derek Hubb Irwin and Frank Foti entertaining from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. This won’t be your only chance to catch this magical event, though. Beer and Magic is a group of magicians who perform at breweries all over Southern California, so make sure to keep an eye out for more.

 

Tuesday –  In Her Words: Spotlight on Women Writers in Film & TV

Women writers in entertainment are still breaking barriers, and this free celebration will shine the spotlight on their contribution to film and television. The new program will feature in-person interviews with women creators who have worked hard to leave a strong mark on the entertainment industry. This week’s installment will feature will feature Tanya Saracho, actress, playwright, dramaturge and screenwriter.

 

Wednesday – Bear City Free Pizza and Beer

Few things draw crowds like the word “FREE” in big letters, as the organizers behind Bear City’s free comedy event in Long Beach next Wednesday well know. In addition to Ellory Smith of Robot Chicken, Conan’s Steve Gillespie and more, Bear City will also provide free pizza for those in attendance.

 

Thursday – National Children’s Chorus Presents “Nebula”

The world-renown National Children’s Chorus will visit Los Angeles on Thursday, to perform works by Edward Elgar, Samuel Barber and more in “Nebula,” a tribute to pioneers, explorers and dreamers who have shaped humanity throughout history. Also during the performance, the Chorus will give their special tribute commemorating NASA’s 60th Anniversary.

Friday – Pain Pizza at Birds & Bees

Wednesday’s event featured pizza and beer, but your Friday night could be a bit classier at Birds & Bees, downtown’s favorite underground cocktail lounge. French bread pizzas topped with cheese, pepperoni or Standing’s Butchery sausage will be served starting at 5pm until sold out.

 

Saturday – Die, Mommie, Die!

Charles Busch stars as Angela Arden in this dramatically-named send-up of ’60s melodramas, which sees Arden kill her sleazy film producer husband. Unfortunately for her, her kids know she’s up to no good and are searching for evidence. Each performance will be recorded live for future radio broadcast, distribution on CD, digital download and online streaming.

Sunday – Two Truths and a Lie

This time-tested party game is getting top billing at Angel City Brewery on Sunday night. Three Los Angeles comedians will take the stage and tell real stories about themselves. The catch is that one of them is making everything up, and it’s up to the audience to figure out who. Entry is free, but only those 21 and over can attend.
