Looking for something to do this week? Here’s our list of can’t-miss events in the Southland. Author talks, urban ecology lectures and pop art gallery openings are all happening this week, but bear in mind that some of these events require tickets, so get your as soon as you can.

09/24: An Evening with Kevin Kwan (Author of “Crazy Rich Asians”)


“Crazy Rich Asians” has become a cultural phenomenon, especially in the diverse Southland, and now fans of the film and novels can spend an evening with author Kevin Kwan. Kwan will discuss Asian culture, take audience questions and sign his latest novel, “Rich People Problems.”


09/25: Salon Series in the Garden: Urban Ecology


Ever dream of opening an urban garden? Ecologist Beth Pratt and Los Angeles urbanist Mia Lehrer will give you the rundown at this salon in the Arts District Tuesday night. Make sure not to eat before hand, because your $60 dollar ticket also comes with a meal.


09/26: Naila and the Uprising


When an uprising rocks the Occupied Palestinian Territories, a young woman in Gaza fights for love, family and freedom in this film co-presented by Human Rights Watch. “Naila and the Uprising” combines archival footage, interviews and animation for an intimate and empowering experience.


09/27: Pop Art Photo Show by Limited Runs


Interactive art is all the rage in Los Angeles these days, and Santa Monica will play host on Thursday to its latest expression. The Pop Art Photo Show will feature vintage images of pop culture, celebrity fashion and much more, with street art and vintage cars getting special attention.


09/28: Mad Craft Skills in Old Town Orange


If on Wednesday you admired pop art, take time on Friday to make your own! The Create Pop Up in Orange will connect budding artists with local designers for a night of arts and crafts. Local businesses will be on hand to provide materials, too.


09/29: An Evening of Classic Lily Tomlin


Saturday is for stand up, and Saturday’s top show is Lily Tomlin taking the stage at Long Beach’s Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Tomlin most recently starred in Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,” and reprised her role of Ms. Frizzle in “The Magic School Bus Rides Again,” so make sure to catch her in this performance.


09/30: Bloody Poetry by Howard Brenton


Mary Shelley and Lord Byron are two of English literature’s wildest authors, having dodged scandals and political upheaval to create the backbone of modern Gothic culture. Fans of the spookier side of English literature will no doubt love this performance, which includes a talkback session with the performers.
