Low-income households have a leg up when it comes to filing taxes this year, thanks to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Garcetti announced earlier this week a new campaign to connect experts and volunteers offering cost-free assistance to individuals and households making less than $54,884 this year.
The big idea behind Free Tax Prep LA this year is to help Angelenos qualify for the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, which could put up to $9,310 back in the average household budget.
“Everyone in Los Angeles should be able to access the tax credits they’re entitled to,” Garcetti said. “No one should be shut out because they can’t afford expensive tax preparation services,”
This year, Mayor Garcetti and other local leaders secured nearly $2.7 million in State funding for free tax prep services.
Tax prep services will be offered at events hosted on more than 25 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) school campuses, a full list of which can be found here.
Additionally, 16 of the City’s FamilySource Centers will offer tax preparation services throughout the tax season. These services are also available to immigrant families filing their taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
Eligible students in the Los Angeles Community College District can also receive assistance at select FamilySource Centers, as the State EITC is available for the first time to people who are 18 years of age.
