WHITTIER (CNS) – An investigation was underway today into a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in the unincorporated East Whittier area that killed a 2-year-old girl a day before her third birthday and left her father in critical condition.
Harley Ferris of Whittier was crossing Santa Gertrudes Avenue, south of Leffingwell Road, along with her 39-year-old father about 5:30 p.m. Sunday when they were struck by a northbound 2015 Lexus ES350, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Robert Ferris was leading his daughter by the hand across the street in a spot about a quarter-mile south of Leffingwell Road where there is no marked crosswalk when they were both struck, according to the CHP.
The toddler was pronounced dead at a hospital, where her father remains in critical condition, the CHP reported.
The 39-year-old Whittier man driving the Lexus stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as factors in the deadly collision, according to the CHP.
