Metro Red/Purple Line Station evacuated for investigation

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The underground Metro Red/Purple Line Station at the Union Station complex in the downtown Los Angeles area was evacuated today while firefighters investigated a report of a “loud sound or sounds” on an inbound train.

Firefighters sent to the facility in the 800 block of North Vignes Street about 8:25 a.m., found no evidence of smoke or fire aboard the train, and there were no injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

“Union Station, Metrolink and Amtrak service are not directly affected by this investigation, though there is a significant increase in patrons safely awaiting subway service to resume,” Humphrey said.

According to Metro, delays of up to 20 minutes were expected, with trains sharing one track between Union Station and Westlake.
