South El Monte woman dies after vehicle she rode in crashed in Whittier

WHITTIER (CNS) – A 23-year-old woman who was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed into a tree in Whittier today and later died was identified by the Orange County coroner’s office.

The crash that claimed the life of Mireya Rivera Avila of South El Monte took place about 5:10 a.m. on southbound Colima Road, according to Whittier police and the coroner’s office.

It’s unclear why Avila was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange after the crash, but that is where she died about 90 minutes later, the coroner’s office reported.

The driver of the vehicle was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to be booked on suspicion of driving under the influence pending his recovery, the OC Register reported.
