The Hub Nov. 6, 2018 Election Guide

We hope you vote on Tuesday (if you haven’t done so already). Here’s our voter guide. We wanted you, our loyal readers, to know where we stand on important issues facing California in general and Los Angeles in particular. The decisions were made by the three members of The Hub-LA.com editorial board and have no bearing on stories published daily in our newsletter or on our website.

STATE OFFICES

GOVERNOR: GAVIN NEWSOM

The legacy left California by outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown will be hard to match. Our state faces many challenges over the next four years from infrastructure repairs, the rise of automation, homelessness and growing pension gaps to minimum wage, public college tuition and health care. We choose Gavin Newsom. His experience as Mayor of San Francisco makes him qualified to manage a state as complicated and diverse as California

LT. GOVERNOR: ED HERNANDEZ

It is a job that is largely ceremonial — although important in that the Lt. Gov makes important decisions for the state when the Gov. is out of town. We believe Ed Hernandez is the right choice for the job. He has proven to be scandal free and we’ll be proud to see the SGV and L.A. County represented in the halls of Sacramento power.

ATTORNEY GENERAL:  XAVIER BECERRA

The job of running law enforcement in California is a trick one. Immigration conflicts with the federal government are sure to be a highlight of the next four years. We believe Becerra is best suited for the task of taking on D.C. when push comes to shove.

SEC. OF STATE: ALEX PADILLA

CONTROLLER: BETTY YEE

TREASURER: FIONA MA

INS. COMMISSIONER: STEVE POIZNER

SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION:  TONY THURMOND

We believe in public schools and feel that Tony Thurmond, who describes himself as a “lifelong advocate for youth and families” is the right man for the job. Charter School advocate Marshall Tuck’s agenda has the potential to take our state back to the bad old days of segregation.

LA COUNTY BALLOT MEASURES:

In the Election Guide we have endorsed some sales tax measures and discouraged passage of others. Our criteria was twofold: In communities where a tax was in place and voters are being asked to extend that sales tax we support a yes vote. In communities where a tax of more than 1/2 of 1 cent is being sought from voters we encourage a no vote. Pasadena’s 3/4 of 1 cent sales tax proposal is especially problematic given the recent embezzlement case and other ongoing government accountability issues in that community. We have a general policy in support of communities normalizing the cultivation and sales of marijuana and believe in their right to tax those activities.
